How to Start a Capsule Wardrobe
Share
Starting a capsule wardrobe is not as difficult as it sounds. Firstly, what is a capsule wardrobe I hear you ask? As described by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called “Wardrobe” in the 1970s ‘a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.’ In other words, a wardrobe that you can easily mix and match different pieces of clothing and accessories depending on the season creating different looks.
Having a capsule wardrobe is great, particularly if you’re constantly on the go, find it difficult finding things to wear when you get up in the morning, or if you just like to be organized and get dressed quickly. Also, you can save money from buying unnecessary pieces that you wouldn’t usually choose to wear and you get to wear your favorite clothes.
You could usually wear a capsule wardrobe for about 3 months, then update it with a couple of pieces from the next season, so, when the pieces you wear get worn out, or no longer fits how it should, shop for something else that you can mix and match with your existing pieces.
To create your wardrobe, there are so many articles online describing how to get started, but, it just seems so complicated. Here at Tooksie, we just tend to go with the flow as fashion simply has no rules. There are a few pieces that we would have as staples though. These are:
- Crisp white shirt
- Basic tee or graphic
- Black blazer
- Sweater
- Cardigan
- Coat
- Jacket
- Little black dress
- Pants (tailored or whatever you prefer)
- Skirt
- Sundress
- Pair of flats
- Pair of heels
- Sneakers
- Boots
- Handbag
- Clutch bag
- Scarf
- Sunglasses
- Summer and winter hat
To condense all of the above, having a capsule wardrobe:
Saves space.
Saves time.
Money.
You get to wear your favorite pieces as you’re mixing and matching.
You can update your collection with seasonal pieces to that you have something to wear for any occasion without buying many new items of clothing.
It’s so easy to mix and match if you start with the basics. Having a capsule wardrobe isn’t essential, but, if you’re looking for an easier life, it’s worth considering.
